Clinton calls for creation of new border security position

U.S. Senator Hillary Clinton has announced a new initiative for legislation to create a homeland security position in charge of the northern border.

Clinton has encouraged the creation of a northern border coordinator for some time, but with the surprising announcement of a possible passport requirement for crossing the U.S. - Canada border, she said now may be the best time to push this legislation forward.

'I've introduced this as an amendment to existing homeland security bills,' Clinton said in a conference call on Wednesday. 'I've given speeches about it and arranged meetings with Canadian officials.

'I have been particularly focused on northern border security, because for too long our northern border has gotten the shorter end of the stick as far as funding goes. This recent announcement of the passport requirement illustrates the need. Such a coordinator could have raised the red flag of the impact of this requirement,' she said.

The northern border coordinator would be appointed by the homeland security secretary and report directly to the under secretary for border and transportation security.

Clinton said that 70 percent of the Canadian population lives within 100 miles of the border, and positive conditions for trading and tourism need to be created.

The legislation will call on Michael Chertoff, secretary of the Department of Homeland Security, to appoint someone to the new position.

The new position would be responsible for devising and implementing measures to increase the security of the border between the United States and Canada and the ports of entry located along the border.

Responsibilities would also include improving coordination between agencies responsible for that security and serving as the primary liaison with state and local governments, law enforcement agencies and the Canadian government regarding security along the border.

'We have had a lot of confusion and missteps because we haven't had someone responsible for this,' Clinton said. 'I think this passport requirement proves my point that we need somebody who is the contact person on our northern border.'

Ms. Clinton is a day-late-and-a-dollar-short! The responsible parties for border control have been stymied by "the Wall" thrown up during the Clinton administration; the INS is now under Homeland Security and the borders are now under Homeland security. Where has this headline grabbing empty pant suit broad been?

McCain and Hillary both see this as THE issue for 2008 and they're positioning themselves, even if all they propose is total B.S.

Worth repeating: McCain and Hillary both see this as THE issue for 2008 and they're positioning themselves, even if all they propose is total B.S.

It's also worth noting, though, that if this did happen you'd see a lot of Federal tax dollars flowing into New York. The Senator would make sure of that. There was discussion two years ago from both NY senators that NY sends more tax dollars to Washington than they ever see coming back into the state...

Ha! Yeah, right. When pigs fly.

Check out her "Move to the center" here, per the ACU. She

Moving to the center? He**, she's farther left in 2004 than
EVER!

McCain and Hillary have consistently opposed any border enforcement crackdowns.

The complete absence of leadership from Bush on these issues has consequences, one of which is to let slime like Clinton look good by comparison.

Hitlery will take advantage of any situation and with the MSM, will be made to look like a "savior". If we get hit again and it can be proven that the perps came across the southern border, she will be able to say "I told you so".
The Republicans had better get their stuff together. Add another Ross Perot to take away Republican votes and we're in trouble. El Presidente Hitlery would declare martial law in less than a New York minute if she could.

Hillary Clinton now has the foundation for her 2008 presidential run for the White House.

And the GOP sits idly by like a little school girl having her lunch taken away without her even knowing what happened.

I hope you are right that it is THE issue in 2008. Helloray is doing a better job of positioning herself than John Quisling McCain.

Helloray voted last Wednesday, along with ALL 44 members of the Democratic Party delegation, for an amendment to the Iraq War Supplemental Funding Bill sponsored by Robert Byrd to provide funding to hire 600+ new Border Patrol Agents, 400+ new interior enforcement ICE agents and 2000 new detention beds. McCain and 33 other Republicans voted against this amendment but fortunately the 21 Republicans who do support enforcing our borders were enough to get this amendment into the final bill.

McCain's positioning on this issue seems to be working with Teddy "the Swimmer" Kennedy to give all the illegals here amnesty and citizenship if they pay a token fine.

Hilary's reading the public much better on this than President Bush is. It goes without saying that she's not really going to do anything except "talk the talk", but that could be enough. Even lefty friends of mine are openly concerned about the borders and, since she'd have their support in any case, she'll talk up border security to peel off other votes from anybody naive enough to believe that she'd actually follow through.

Total b.s. to be sure, but the democrats will be very fortunate if they can steal this issue from Republicans who are ignoring the border issues....

It's amazing that McCain believes he can win the conservative support in the 2008 primaries with his liberal record. Maybe in the Northeast but I doubt anywhere else.

Folks, we are living in an absolute looney-tunes land. While we're guarding against the vast hordes of Canadians streaming in to the US, I am absolutely incensed that they're not interdicting all those kayaks from Antarctica flooding into Kansas.

The fix is in - and both parties are party to it.

Hillary also voted for the AgJobs amnesty like McCain. Neither of them are doing us any favors.
